Gallery Labo to Showcase New Work by Ikenishi Go
August 26 to September 3
On the Ikenishi Go Exhibition
Ikenishi Go has deployed his Kiseto (yellow Seto) pottery in recent years in more than 50 kinds of vessels for tea, saké, flowers, food, and other content. Now, he is venturing into a realm where Kiseto overlaps Shino ware. Ikenishi characterizes his new work as “Kino” (Ki[seto]-[Shi]no). His current exhibition at Gallery Labo spans the Kino spectrum, from more Kiseto-like to more Shino-like. And it comprises, in typically Ikenishi fashion, a diversity of vessels of all sizes.
“People tend to assume,” remarks Ikenishi, “that Kiseto glaze is somehow especially sensitive. And they tend to attribute variations in the appearance of my Kiseto output to the serendipity of the kiln. They fail to realize the role of the different glazes that I have developed and employed. Kiseto is therefore less rewarding for the potter than genres that yield more spectacular variation through firing [laughs].”
I look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible at Gallery Labo for a hands-on look at Ikenishi’s latest work. Here, for those of you unable to visit us in Saijo, are conscientious renderings of the works on display. Enjoy!
