“Shards of pottery from long-ago kilns turned up in a pond next to our elementary school. The kid from our school who discovered them became a local celebrity. Of course, we had items of pottery in our house, like chawan tea bowls and vases, but the discovery in the pond triggered my first real awareness of pottery. Only later did I learn that my hometown, Sakai, had been an early production center of unglazed earthenware. That understanding engenders a sense of destiny about my having ended up here in the pottery town of Shigaraki.”
