6. About Dealers Who Call Potters “Sensei”

A dealer who possesses genuine respect for a potter is entirely right in expressing that respect with the honorific “sensei.” That can be as a suffix appended to the surname as a title—Suzuki-sensei—or as a pronoun in place of the surname—Sensei. But using the term indiscriminately cheapens the term. Potters sensitive to verbal and social nuance will find it annoying and even insulting.
