“I only buy ceramics by contemporary artists. The risk of fakes is simply too great with old stuff.”
“And how do you know that the contemporary stuff is real?”
“Buying from reputable galleries is pretty good assurance.”
“Pretty good assurance of what?”
“That the work really is by the artists to which it is attributed.”
“What about assurance that the stuff is really good?”
“I only buy works that I like. And I double-check my taste against what I hear from the better galleries and what I read in authoritative publications and on the Web.”
“What about the vested interests at work in the galleries and in the media?
“What do you mean?”
“I mean the galleries and media that have a vested interest in ramping up the prices for their flavor-of-the-month potters.”
“Uh . . . .”
“What about that version of fakery?”
“I never thought about that.”
“Maybe it’s time you did.”
