“As a child, I caused problems for my parents by wandering around the house with a screwdriver and disassembling our electrical appliances. I was enchanted with the unseen world that lay hidden away beneath the appliance casings. The thought dawned on me one day that the natural world now lays hidden away beneath the trappings of industrial society. Later, I awakened to the wondrousness of the human capacity for transforming materials into something that had not existed before. The ensuing encounter with the potter Harada Shuroku and my subsequent apprenticeship to him transformed me into a servant of the wonders of Bizen.”
