“I’d led a peaceful and uneventful life, which was to my liking, and I had a good job as a prefectural employee, with a promotion in the offing. One day, a thought hit me from out of the blue: I’d been doing everything possible to avoid coming to terms with who and what I really was. I became disgusted with my lukewarm existence and quit my job. Before long, I was cutting logs with a chainsaw, splitting them with an ax, digging soil for clay, carrying it in sandbags, loading and firing a kiln, laughing at this, crying at that. And that’s who I am this day.”
