Komiya Yukina and Chen Wei-chu

October 7 to 20

We at Gallery Labo take pride in introducing our online visitors this week to the fanciful work of Komiya Yukina and Chen Wei-chu. Please take this opportunity to explore the artistic visions of these two potters, one born in Taiwan and now working in Japan, the other born in Japan and now working in Taiwan.
Komiya Yukina, a native of Okinawa, encountered Chinese culture early through her maternal grandfather, who was Chinese, and her maternal grandmother, who was Taiwanese. She moved to Taiwan in 2014 and now works out of a pottery studio that she shares with a friend.
"I want to create work," says Komiya, "that conveys a sense of touch through the eyes." She will hold a solo exhibition at Gallery Labo in March 2018.
Chen Wei-chu, a native of Taiwan, spent a childhood summer vacation in Japan with an aunt who had married a Japanese. She later came to Japan to spend a residency at the Shiga Ceramic Cultural Park.
"My work is an invitation to people," explains Chen, "to rediscover their childhood joy at playing with toys." She now lives and works in Ehime Prefecture.
