Transitional phases, whether in pottery or in any field of endeavor, offer fascinating glimpses into the larger scheme of events. Two examples are Kiseto (yellow Seto) ware and Shino ware. Kiseto emerged from the Seto tradition at a recognizable pace and subsequently begat Shino. The latter appeared so suddenly that commentators have frequently accounted for it as a mutation, rather than an evolutionary development. But an organic progression is visible on careful viewing. I have explored that progression in the Kino (Kiseto + Shino) works in this exhibition. Viewers might remember that I began that exploration in some of the works in my previous exhibition at Gallery Labo. The works on view here are the result of broadening the scope of my exploration. I hope that these works will convey something of my fascination with an important juncture in the history of pottery.
